Lewis On Federal Spending

Democrat John Lewis sent an e-mail today in which he criticizes "Washington D.C." for "asking our kids and parents to foot the bill." He added that, "It’s true that the government must get leaner, we must cut out waste and live within our means."

While Lewis, a Democrat candidate for Congress, takes those positions about spending, some have criticized him for an entire career as a top aide to one of Washington's biggest spenders. His e-mail did not address those charges. Instead he talked about various government spending programs he supports.

No one had the opportunity to ask him how claiming to favor cutting spending while at the same time endorsing spending was likely to work. One observer expressed hope that Lewis might clarify this apparent contradiction as the campaign season goes forward.
