Lewis: Words vs. Deeds

When Max Baucus's top staffer, John Lewis, announced he was running for Congress, he released a video. In it he said, "We need representatives who work together, even when they don't agree."

Yesterday he sent a fundraising letter. The message consisted solely of shredding Representative Paul Ryan's budget proposals -- which Lewis acknowledged aren't even known yet. The extremely negative email contained no information about reaching across the aisle, being civil, or even "working together, even when we don't agree." Instead it was devoted entirely to negative attacks of the kind that have given Congress its current low approval rating.

One observer, on reading the e-mail, was heard to remark unfavorably on how the promise of his ad and the reality of his current statements add up.
